Thank you Latvian Canadian Cultural Centre, for taking in The Society of Estonian Artists in Toronto for our 69th annual art exhibition.

EKKT was founded in 1956 by Estonian artists who arrived in Canada after the Second World War. This year’s show is titled "Into the Unknown - Tormine Tee Teadmatusse," in observance of the 80th anniversary of The Great Escape to the West and the Beginning of the Resistance.

The mandate of the Society is to support the work of artists of Estonian descent living in Canada. Through exhibitions, workshops and other social events, EKKT's tradition is to offer opportunities for our members with the common language of art through an Estonian lens. This year’s show is in honour of the Society’s predecessors and their almost seven decade legacy. The founding members of EKKT brought their professional practice and art knowledge from Estonia to establish a strong presence in Canadian society, particularly in Toronto, mobilizing after displacement to build new institutions abroad.

Artistic practice in the community evolved to reflect and influence Canadian culture using traditional and new media as a vehicle of expression. Staying connected with the art community in Estonia is a vital part of our ongoing activities. Exchanging ideas inspires the growth of the society and respects our Estonian roots. The founding artists were survivors whose strength was a testament to the endurance of the Estonian cultural community. Their presence and legacy are felt in the continuation of charting new territory.
